3ashura, Mu7aram & 7ssainiya

Warning: Racists or Idiots-Who-Think-That-Shee3a&Sunna-Are-Different-Religions-Or-Races are NOT allowed to read this post… but if you read it anyway, please don’t comment.. Unless you have something nice to say, just keep it to yourself…
As for normal sane reasonable people, it’s okay…
3ashura is over and it was heartbreaking.. It’s the best day of the year because it truly cleanses the heart… I don’t even know how Hajj’s going to feel like if it’s going to be more cleansing than Mu7arram.. I can’t wait, actually hehe
Me & my mom always like trying out new 7ssainiyat every year.. For the past 4 years I’ve had this blog and I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about 3ashura, Mu7aram & 7ssainiyat.. I know, shame on me lol
Anyways, out of all those 7ssainiyat, I’m feeling very comfortable at 7ssainiyat el Resheed in Salwa.. They always bring great people to read and speak there, it becomes more interesting every year and this year we went there every night and 3ashura morning..
So from all of those previous 7ssainiyat (I think I’ve been to around 10 or 15 various ones), I’ve always had some observations.. here they are (not all these points were seen at one place or repeatedly.. they just came along randomly, hence standing out lol):
1- Please don’t bring your kids (under the ages of 5 years old), they don’t need to see women crying and allow their innocent cluelessness add to the sound effects with their own creative questions/wails/requests…
Examples? okay:
* “Maamaaaa! Abi chaaaaiiiiii!!” *fills it up with sugar and stirs till it gets cold*… *sees mom crying but taps on her shoulder anyway* “Maamaa.. baaaaarid, mabi… Mamaaa.. laish tabcheeen!? 3adi, fee chai thani, la tez3eleen, bs hatha baaaarid!”
* On the 9th night, a mom held her 3 year old close while crying over the story of 3bdullah AlRathee3, here’s what the kid says.. “Mamaa, ayy… Mama abi al3ab sayalaa (sayara).. Mama, khaleeeni al3aaab! YUMA!!”
* “Oooffffffff!!! Mama, shoofay el telvizyoooon, el rayal ga3ed yabchi!! hahaha shakla etha7ek! RAYAL YABCHIIII!”
* Two boys fighting over a toy… “Mali.. 3a6ni! maaaliii!!” *sudden slap on the thigh* *sudden gasp of shock and horror* “MAMA!! Shofeeeehh!! 6agaaniii! Yumaaa, shooofeeh 9ayer maleeq! YAL MALEEEQQ!!!”
Oh, and please, please, pretty please with cheese on top, don’t breastfeed your child in front of me
I know it’s supposed to be a beautiful and natural thing, but I do NOT need to be scarred for life with the sight of you breast-feeding your screaming child in the middle of a 7ssainiya, your shaila falling off your shoulder every few minutes…
2- Don’t hog the sofas when you’re in your 20’s and 30’s when there’re women ages 50 and older limping around and almost begging for a seat…
I don’t think the daggers coming out of almost everybody’s eyes in the hall could get any sharper when a girl in her 20’s was hogging the space next to her on the sofas by having her huge silver bag on it..
A very old woman was limping and asked her if she could sit where the bag was since she’d had a knee operation.. I remember her saying “Mumkin ag3ad hni? Emsawya 3amaliya fe rkabee oo ma agdar ag3ad 3alaiha..”
That younger bitch actually said “Ba3dain wain a7e6 aghrathi ya3ni?!”
I could’ve totally slapped her.. thankfully there was a space between my mom and another old lady and they called her over…
Poor lady couldn’t bring her maid (to help her walk at least, or to carry a chair for her) because she had grandchildren at her house and couldn’t leave them alone or bring them to the 7ssainiya with her…
How can somebody like that seat-hogging chick NOT have a heart like that? Shino hal thilm? La, oo yaya tabchi 3ala wa7ed mathloom mithil el Imam el 7ussain? Estaghfer Allah min hal ashkal :/
3- Please choose something a bit more appropriate to wear than a tight 3abaya with a red firey dragon trailing down your back and ass for a place of grieving and mourning.. Oh, and the camel hump head’s supposed to be on the fashion “Don’t” list too..
The other day I was image-searching for some pics for this post, and I used general keywords (using yamli.com.. weshalem!) like “mu7aram”, “alimam al7ussain”, “3ashoora” and the such… I kept getting these images…
(Click these links if you’re not a fan of blood and painful sights: Ouch, Ouch and WTF?!)
By chance, one of the teachers was passing by the computer to get something near the staff phone and caught sight of blood, the poor thing freaked… She sat down and just stared at the pics, asking me questions like “Do you really do that? What does it mean? Why the babies? 7aram!”
Well, here’s the explanation I gave her and would give to anybody who’d generalize and say that all shee3a do this and don’t mind inflicting pain on themselves..
It’s not acceptable. I don’t approve of it and we don’t do that in Kuwait (as far as I know).
I mean, Allah gives us a soul and a body as gifts. Mo 9a7 aham shay bil dinya el 9u7a oo peace of mind? So I don’t think he’d appreciate it when you ruin both..
Committing suicide is wrong and punishable because you’re damaging ur body and throwing away your soul.. I don’t think hurting yourself (even if you’re mourning) would be appreciated too..
So no, I don’t draw blood by beating myself up and I don’t do that to my younger brothers and I don’t encourage my older brothers to do it to themselves…
Clear? clear.
*sighs* Aham shay ina I’m blogging this at work and being serious and one of my co-workers is dancing to “el 7an6oor”, the rest are singing along “terreren terreren”… Professional teachers i7na, btw…

That’s a very rude girl! O sheno hal rad, walla jelat 7aya! Yes OUCH those pictures. I can really say that I am ignorant about most of these things because I had previously chosen to be. It makes sense that not a lot of people behave this way, only because in every “belief” there are people on all levels of that spectrum.. same thing applies to ALL beliefs and ideologies. Most people however, do not see that.

i liked your post ..
BRAVO.. im so proud of you ..
..
girls attending husainiyas i was going to blog about it .. but since no one reads my blog alot .. i didnt ..
very true how they think its only a job to attend with the family .. they dont really understand what the moral meaning to it .. and what is the main reason .. what they think that its a must and a black fashion show ..!!
..
blood and hurting your self .. i think that so many “maraje3″ have said that its not well and fee eshkal if you do it .. coz of what people are doing .. its also a long story .. but i agree with you on not doing it..
..

LOL at the last comment
it would be very educating if you explain to us why do some people in places like, Iran and Lebanon do all that beating to themselves!
btw, your warning was a bit insulting

I went to Al-Zahra mosque in South Surra. It was my first time there. I liked the fact it wasn’t crowded at all. Good thing it’s very close to home. I’ll definitely go there next year.
I had to take my little one with me. He was like “abeee baba” and when it was time to pray I had to wait for my sister-in-law to finish her prayers so she can look after him while I pray. That’s when he screamed out loud and urged me to “pray, pray, pray, pray!” I had to take him quickly to the other room.
Last year I took him with me everyday to Hussainiyat ِAl-Hazeem in Mansouriya, he slept most of the time there and he didn’t bother me much.
But you’re right, I should not bring him along next time.

The couch-hogging bitch.. Ana abi a6eg`ha w I wasn’t even there! And thanks for explaining the not all she3as inflict pain on themselves because a lot of my she3a friends get stereotyped as that.
Shyab el7an6oor to your department? Lol;p
P.S. Hajj is amazing!

January 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
lol @ coworkers!!!
it is so refreshing seeing someone embrace their faith, which ever faith it may be. So long as u r spiritually content, i dont think you should worry about racists etc.
3ad i have a complaint. theres a 7sainya around 6 houses down from mine…i have never seen za7ma chithi before in my life! it felt like i was on house arrest cuz no one would come as the traffic was horrible and i cannot keep a grip on my road rage. so i just stayed home. plz start a campaign for mu7arram carpooling or something, for the love of hassan and hussain!

First of, 3atham allah ajrech sis.
Second, i tottaly agree with what you said! Some women don’t have any absolute respect for this day.
If you allow me to add, alot of people when they leave 7seneya they tottaly forget the main reason in which made them come in the first place, and that is, clinging to the noble and moral princibles of ahal el bait. You see them trashing the 7seneya and specially the streets when they ask for vimto or leban!!! They’re literally ruining our reputation! Eshteswa 3laina yegolon 6a3 el shee3a wa9kheen, chithy el emam 3alamhom!! It is really frustrating
I don’t think ever their visits will be taken into account if the second they leave 7seneya they start acting immorally and against the princibles of ahal el bait.
7seneyat el rasheed is good, i’ve been there many times in 3ashir. You should try out el 3abaseya, el shaikh malhom is really inspiring.

That was a nice post and I agree on some things, but there are some kids who understand eventually and I find that it’s great they’re going there because they learn the importance of it so young and keep on doing it as they grow older.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:08 am
Interesting post, I always wondered how it goes there. There are unfortunately a lot of shia’a haters out there. Most of my best friends are shia’a.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:12 am
they are different. sunna are obviously superior to she3a

January 22nd, 2008 at 5:12 am
oh yeah and i forgot to add: she3a smell bad. like the groin of a hairy wrestler. thats it.
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 am
Woow, interesting!!Ive always wanted to know what is the purpose of a 7seneya’s and what she3a’s exactly do at that time? Im from UAE and the population of Local She3a’s is a minority, there are mostly of Iranian Origin(3yam).
I dont believe that there are people who discriminate other Religions, She3a’s are Muslims too and we all believe in Allah (SWT), why are humans soo pathetic!!
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
loooooooooooool 3ala el 7an6ooor thingy .. I guess ur done with ur examz and corrections .. so u r taking it out on el 7an6oooor
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Bringning very youmg kids is wrong. Posting the picture is wrong aswell, because it has nothing to do with el emam il7sain (3). And lelasaf there are few places in kuwait where they perform these stupid acts, such as hurting themselves with swords etc.. there at least 3, and someone should do something about it.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 pm
I cant believe that young girl wouldnt let the meskeena lady sit down next to her- how dare she!!!! What has happened to people????
And I think taking kids to the hussainiya is a good thing, but only if they can be controlled and its better not to let them sit next to other kids.
I googled pics for Ashura’a and Hussainiya, etc and got the same stuff- and you’re right we dont do that here in Kuwait and it shouldnt be stereoptying all of us Shiites. But people like to see the bad and judge only by that. God told us not to harm ourselves in any way and I dont support people who do. Grieving comes in many forms, but not mutilation- especially on the poor kids…..so sad.
I have to say that i have usually been going to Hussainiyat Bu Hamad, but this year its been Hussainiyat Al-Karbalaiya—and just let me say- WOW!!! Al-Faly is just amazing!!
I have been to 7ssainiyat el Resheed in Salwa a few times, however because I am an American Shiite and dont really know the real Arabic- just the Kuwaiti dialect- its hard for me to understand sometimes. But sub7nallah even though Al-Faly is of iraqi origin- I get every word he says! If u havent been there before i wud say —-GO!!
And if anyone knows of any Hussainiya that has someone read in English- i wud love to know
Thanks
January 23rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Off topic ….. love your new blog look. Did you do the graphic girl yourself??
January 23rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
chikapappi: differnt sheikhs use different accents and some speak pure arabic.. and no, you don’t own me anymore :p
N.: lel asaf, the most gruesome pics are the ones that’re spread the most, so they become the known..
hamad: thanks
Noufa: Sure thing..
The reason why people in Iran & Lebanon think it’s okay to beat themselves up is because they think it’s the best way to show mourning.. they’re so greif-stricken, they want to FEEL the same pain as Al-7ussain and the people at his camp..
And how is my warning insulting?
pearls: I prefer 7ssainiyat that’re just a bit za7ma..
Take 7assoon when he’s just a tiny bit older, 4 or 5 years old, he’d be easier to keep busy, drawing and stuff oo ib nafs el waqt he can start to learn..
I just get annoyed with the kids who’re hard to keep quiet, and they’re usually under 5 years old..
Amethyst: It should be something that’s cleared up, not all google images are the truth.. I could google Iran and get everything political and nuclear bombs, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t beautiful nature and beutiful pure 7athrat that shee3a love to visit regularly..
My fellow collegues 7atharat’hum feehum 6arab, so they’re playing their ringtones as music to dance too *sighs*
gottlieb: which is the funny part? lol
And yes, the world IS coming to an end
Mrm:
“It is so refreshing seeing someone embrace their faith, which ever faith it may be. So long as u r spiritually content, i dont think you should worry about racists etc.”
That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever read in this comments’ section hehe Thanks hun
I totally agree! There’s this looong sidewalk near 7ssainiyat el Resheed and it’s sooo crowded! Carpooling’s a great plan lol
Ms Loala:

Ajerna oo ajrech
I agree with you
And my uncle was complimenting el 3abasiya the other day, might try it next year or for any upcoming graya ;D
Jacqui:
Hehehe, I agree with that, that’s why I said over 5 years old..
abdvllah:
Hehe most of my friends are sunna
offmyhead: Keep in mind that I only approved your comments so people can have a good idea of what a racist idiot looks like
eshda3wa:
Ajerna oo ajrech hun..
And you’re right about Al-Anwar, there’re so many channels! Oo 7ata lo your aunt wants the kids to learn, let them wait till after they’re 5, 6 or 7 years old.. they can still learn but at the same time they’ll understand the importance of being quiet..
Zuzu:
That’s the way I think too.. No matter what math’hab a person is, shee3i or sunni, all of still pray to one God and have one Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).. Some people are just too dumb and stubborn to understand that..
Cat:
LOL NO! NOT “you’re”.. THEY’RE celebrating, I’m still in muharram mode!
Hasan.B: lol I don’t want to know about the places we have here who practise that kind of ritual, it’s un-acceptable to me.. and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the pic, it’s in 7ssainiyat all over Kuwait and other countries..
NoNoWa:
I wonder the same thing all the time
Exactly my thoughts towards bringing kids
Eeee, I saw Al-Faly on AhluAlBait channel, he was pretty good
I think I know a few, I’ll e-mail you the details as soon as I find them… Btw, on AhluAlBait channel (yes, I’m watching it the most lol) there’re speeches and lectures given by Al-Muddaressi in english, he is AMAZING! I love his style and story-telling..
MiYaFuSHi: lol Thanks, Jacqui did it for me.. and the girl on the header is from iStock images, I think..

ma2jo0ra my dear

i really loved the waay how u explained everything and ur reply to ur colleague was something !
mom goes to 7saineyat muslim ben 3ageel as well “a.k.a: alrasheed ” but i always go to 7saineyat elshai5 el aw7ad and they have a new sheikh which is pretty good
you really hitted the spots about ladies and kids and girls with tight 3abaya’s , and there’s something i also noticed recently that some girls don’t come weaRing 3abaya’s they just wear ban6aronat o long jackets ! is that the new “IN” thing or what?
January 24th, 2008 at 4:36 am
Yeah I like to watch AhlulBayt- and Al-Muddaressi is wonderful!!
I appreciate your help hun
Thanks for a great post, too!
January 25th, 2008 at 2:42 am
I’m not trying to be racist here, and I don’t want to sound like it. But I have a question because I’ve always wanted to know this:
Why is it that Shiites really want to feel pain and hurt from something that happened so long ago? I dont know if u know this, but in Islam, we’re not encouraged to mourn over anyone for a period longer than 3 days.
First of all, its not healthy. Second of all, shouldn’t we focus on the good things in life, and not mourn over a betrayal or a death that happened thousands or hundreds of years ago?
That’s what really confuses me. I don’t beleive that anyone would want to be remembered in such a sad way. Its better to be remembered happily.
Also, yes the beatings do happen in Kuwait. My Shiite friends told me so. But not as much as in Pakistan or Iran.
January 25th, 2008 at 8:23 am
The audacity of some people…

**bows** thank you thank you for stated the childern problem. I keep bitching about it year after year:P. When I was in kuwait i loved the open concept some hussianyat had. I usually went to the one with Al Muhajir reading, amazing lecturer that man, I almost introduced myself when his ‘bodyguards’ blocked my view. It didnt stop me from yelling (this is the mens ’section;) “You are amazing Shekinaa!!” In english of course:P
