What The Hell Is Happening To The World?

Last night I was watching the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with the girls (Chika’s “Chez Swair’s” post here) and Jeff Foxworthy gave us the definition of “Redneck” as a person who “has an overwhelming lack of sophistication” and i’d like to add the word manners to the definition..
I think “Redneck” is the english synonym for “3agad”.. you don’t have to be from the south to be a redneck and you certainly don’t have to be bedouin to be considered 3agad.
3agad is a state of mind. It’s an overwhelming lack of sophistication, manners, common sense, hygiene and a brain. Why are bedouins considered “3agad” in Kuwait? Because el khair ekhu9 oo el shar e3em… Fe kil shay el zain AND el shain and seeing little dirty boys with no shoes, a naba6a, breaking street lights and throwing rocks in the street for fun in a dirty dishdasha (and I know they’re a minority) are seen the most, hence considered the majority..
I am 7′9riya.
I went to the college of education, and there are many bedouin and 7a’9ar people.
I’ve met the good and the bad.
Bnaya bdweya who stepped on my foot with her high heel, saw me in pain, smirked and walked away VS. a bdweya girl who I had to work on a project with who was extremely helpful and we were the only two hard workers in a group of 5…
7′9riya who looked me up and down in disgust cos I came to college in jeans VS. A 7′9riya who became friends with me and the aforementioned bedouin girl…
I am a shee3iya.
I went to school/college with alot of shee3a and senna.
I’ve met the good and the bad from both sides.
Extreme sunni girl who refused to let me drink some water from a bottle she was holding VS. a sunni who i’m still close friends to…
An extreme shee3iya who hated me and thought I was “going sunni” just because I was friends with one, and an ordinary shee3ya like me who I’m still friends with..
I am middle class.
I went to school/college with rich kids and middle class kids..
I’ve met the good and the bad.
Rich kids who flaunted their money and didn’t talk to you unless you had 2 designer items or more on you (bag? scarf? pendant at least?) VS. Rich kids who were reasonable and chuckled at the thought of a 700 KD designer bag…
Middle class who tried to show off that they had money to impress the rich kids and acted bigger than their size VS. Middle class who knew how much money they have and how NOT to waste it..
I am a muslim.
I’ve met muslims and christians..
I’ve met the good and the bad.
Muslims who were very rude VS. normal muslims acting like normal nice human beings
Christians who think muslims are disgusting and “non-believers” VS. christians who treated us like family in the US during the Iraqi Invasion..
There’s been some sort of fight going on around the blog-o-sphere about racism and thinking of people as being “lower” than oneself becuase of the background, religion, ethnicity… Isn’t this a bit old? Isn’t it common sense to treat people with respect? to know that people are people no matter where they come from, no matter which language they speak, no matter which “God” they pray to?
It’s like that random blogger who was apalled at the thought of taking blood from the blood bank and that the blood would happen to be from an Indian or Afghan person… IT’S BLOOD! Is your blood blue or something?! Is it royal blood that shouldn’t be “tarnished” with “outsiders’ ” blood?!
Aren’t we old enough to realize that that behaviour is so racist and childish? What the hell is happening to the world?
Am I that naive? that innocent to think this way? Aren’t there any nice people in the world today?
I have to literally yell at students in my school who take off their hjab inside school.. not because their hjab is off (because that’s a personal choice, whatever, kaifhum), but because when they see an indian worker doing some work they just ignore him and don’t rush for their hjab.. when I tell them to wear their headscarves, they say “La la, MO RAYAL!”
What… The… Hell?! These kids are being raised with this stupid mentality… the dude (no matter which nationality) has a PENIS! Rayal gha9ban 3an wayhech!
Why do people even allow themselves to think like that? I thought the world had less Nazis and Adolf Hitler’s “White Power!” preaching and concentration camps mentality! I thought the KKK was considered dead!
I sometimes feel like we’re in one of those public high schools you see in american TV shows! There are the goths, the nerds, the drama kids, the cheerleaders, the jocks, the science freaks, the band kids, the class president.. each person has a “label” and is treated differently… are people these days acting like teenaged kids? like… oh em jee… like, so, like, TOTALLY! Ooh Maaii Gaawwwd!
We have parents of all nationalities, tribes, skin colors, religions and sects who teach their children how to be with other people.. How to treat them and how to look at them with a certain perspective… I’m just hoping that all of these parents actually take the time to tell their kids that “What goes around, comes around.” and that you should ALWAYS “Treat people the same way you want to be treated.”
Sure, people might say “Oooofff!! Hal hindi hatha!!” or “eee, ghabi, 9a3eeeddiii!!”, and there are those “3azmi“, “M6airi“, “7asawee” and “3eemi” jokes out there…
And I do admit to laughing at some and sending them around.. I’ve even laughed at jokes about 7asaweeya (my origin)! I’m not perfect!
but I’ve learned that if I was ever going to forward those jokes, I should just change the “label” word into an adjective “ghabi”, “3aneed”, “em7ashesh”… I won’t be part of the spreading of intolerence… If you don’t have anything nice to say, just shut up, don’t say it, don’t hurt people you don’t even know and then expect to be treated nicely for no apparent reason!
Almu’97ik el mubki (the funny/sad thing) is that there are BOOKS about people being raised like that.. Laialy just posted about a book called “Talk To The Hand“.. since when do people even feel the need to write such books?
Blekh.. I just depressed myself…
Your thoughts and opinions, please?

Racisim and discrimination are natural human trait, we all do it in one form or another, sometimes influenced by society, but we are tuned as human to be racist, we eat plants and animals, we believe we are the rulers of this planet and the universe, everyone believes deep inside they are better than the other, even if they do not admit it.
Nothing will change and it will be the same in 50 years and in 100 years, one has just to adjust and accept it as being part of human existence, nothing can be done to fix it, and any attempts at that are based on false hopes and wishful dreaming.

You know, every time I feel like things will change, and racism will eventually decrease, I hear or experience something really bad.. I always say that our generation is a good one that really wants change and believes in it, but then.. I’m disappointed. I sit with my circle of friends at college, and they flip my mood. I’m the happiest most optimistic person. Then, I walk to one of my lectures, and I see things that just kill my mood. What to do? I’ve had discussions with absurd people who advocate freedom of choice and freedom of lifestyle but don’t want to be associated with “the other”. Seriously? WTF is going on? I better stop here..

Great post.. bas lel asaf purg is right
Nothing will change
December 22nd, 2007 at 6:39 pm
People will never change. It’s rare to find people nowadays who don’t look at money, “a9el”, senna-she3a, etc. yeah, depressing

[...] chose to write after Speedo & Swair because in such a community we shouldn’t tolerate such ignorance YES [...]
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 pm
Yeah, well sure people will never change. There is always the view of people from a different angle. This will always exist. However, we should always TREAT people the same.. even we cannot see them as the same. Sometimes I even doubt, that this is, a truth. Maybe we are supposed to see some ppl as differently as others.. not in a very bad way though, I don’t know anymore..

WOW, swair u really impressed me that post really hitted the nerve..
yup it’s not only racism in color or race there are too many things , like some people yetkabero0n 3ala ahalhum welseba inah 3ala go0lat.hum mo mostawana or if they’re 3aya they’d be like ” ay shay e7na na36ey bentna 7g 7asawey ? ”
And Yup i’m 7asaweya but i follow the concept of ” ina akramkum 3nd allah atgakum ”
when u think about it later on , will we take ” 7asabna o nasabna o flo0sna m3ana elgaber? ” wela 3amalek ya 9a7eb el3amal ?

i have to disagree with purg
it changes thru education
thru changing ppls perception
it mite not be abolished
but it definitely can be faught against and decreased
if we all had that attitude then slavery would have never been abolished.
if things never changed we the shee3a would never have gained religious freedom, racism can and should be faught!

I got a link to your post from Chika’s… very powerful post
I loved it

i remember my school days .. and people who thought that they are different where the minority .. and majority of school where so friendly .. both years 1988 – 1989 .. there was around 300 students and all of us were friends .. except for those 15 or 20 students which thought that they are different .. things changed after 1990 and slowly escalated .. for so many reasons .
if you want to really look for the reason..
its in parents..
there is no kid who will think of his own until that kid adopts it from his own home ..
if you really want to make a difference ..
teach the next generation to love each other for who they are .. this is the best way to fix it ..
December 23rd, 2007 at 5:12 pm
i beleive change will happen, although slowly, but it will happen..
and u can’t change everyone u know. Even in the most developed countries, racism still exists.
But we have to try and change what we CAN anyway.. by preaching to those around us and our kids and families and relatives.. and they in turn will change others..
Let’s hope

swaaaair 7bebty .. ur post was very straight forward. which is bit unsual when it comes to us .. arabs never consider them selves racist becuase they are supposed to be muslims and in islam ,, were all SUPPOSED to be equal ..
so if one ever acknowledges being racist hes also saying hes a hypocrite.
if we only knew islam .. if we only knew how to approach it in the right way.. instead of just planting rules and fear .. in ppls hearts and heads. to instead learn and now how peaceful and humble it is. non of this would be here.
our society is drowning in hypocrisy and materialism .. when it comes to material names or things .. it has taken over .. long ago.
it reached the state of being irreversible .. its like were going backwards in time .. those ppl the ones who think they are better than some nationalities or colors or race will see the truth one day .. and it will kill them,
if not in their life time it will be in their graves.
rest assured that they will see the truth sooner or later.
that is why we need more teachers like ur self .. so it is sooner

chikapappi: lol I love u too :*
Jacqui: uhm.. ok.
Blue Dress: It is an origin, and I love you no matter what you are or where you’re from :p
Purgatory: Aha. So Martin Luther King Jr, JFK, Robert Kennedy, Princess Diana, Ghandi and a whooole bunch of other people all worked on equality and decreasing the rate of hate crimes and racsim are all based on false hopes and wishful dreaming?
And see Eshda3wa’s comment..
Amethyst: Let’s just hope that those situations you go through are just the minority..
Yara: La, I insist he’s wrong lol
Enigma: People NOW won’t change, bs in the future they will.. they just need the right situations to slap some sense into them.. the right teachers.. the right reading material (blogs? :p)
N: You’re right about the treating each other part.. as the ever-wise Justin Timberlake said “What goes around, comes around” lol!
Zabo0o6a: “3amalek ya 9a7eb el3amal”… 9a7 ellsanich!
eshda3wa: Thank YOU!
Ansam: Thanks hun ;D 7ayach!
Hamad: Exactly, the background and home lifestyle totally affects kids’ behaviour..
this lady: Very true, you can only influence enough people one at a time, so you hope they transfer that knowledge and way of treatment onto other people..
3baid: Thanks
Cat: Hehe 9a7 ebdenech, hun
no3ik: The word “SUPPOSED” reminds me of something my mom always says lol “Bain el mafrouth (el supposed lol) wa el waqe3 farq kabeer..”

I love this post and I totally agree with you. I hate that and because I live abroad, I see the difference. See, I know there’s racism everywhere but there, most of the time, people treat youo as HUMANS, not as Catholics, Shia, Sunni, Jewish, Protestants, No religion, whatever you are. That is what I love about living abroad. Kil wa7ed fi 7ala, you know.. I know an Eyptian Family, and they ask about Kuwait I say yes it’s my country and many good advantages, bas if you want your dignity, you stay here.

Things DO change. It takes time. Thanks be to God we are no longer burning wise old women as “witches”. We aren’t burying little girl babies. Women, occasionally, are earning the same pay as men for the same job.
Thanks be to God these girls at your school have you for a teacher, Swair. You are teaching them, by your example, by your character, more than you ever intended.
